Wotwine best value wines of the week – w/c 5th August 2019
w/c 5th August 2019
With the Tasting Panel away for a well-deserved break, we have taken a look back over the last few weeks at those wines which didn’t quite make it into the “Wines of the Week” but still caught our attention as offering decent quality at Good or Fair Value. Sometimes it is a close call, particularly if we get a unusually strong week, so these are not necessarily “second best”. We’ve focused on different types this week, rather than price bands.

The Wotwine panel of independent experts tastes a wide range of supermarket wines every week to pick out the top buys for you. We won’t recommend a wine unless it is at least “Fair Value”, so worth within 10% either way of the retail price, but we try to find those that give you a bit of a bargain. Happy and great-value drinking… in moderation of course!
We highlighted a couple of Proseccos recently from Asda and here is a third that is also well-made and attractive, whilst offering Fair Value.
Tasting note:Nicely made, fruity fizz with ripe yellow peach, red apples and a slightly sweet, floral finish.
We’ve had a run of decent rosés recently and here is another, this time from South Africa. It’s a delicate pale colour in the Provence style without the price premium and definitely worth a try in our view.
From: Aldi Price: £6.99 Wotwine thinks this is worth: £7.50
Tasting note:Pale, fruity wine with ripe sweet strawberries, fresh acidity and good balance.
We finish with a couple of reds as the other whites we rated highly are not now available. Clearly they were popular! The first, our Wine of the Week, is a flavoursome Rhone with real quality but at a very reasonable price whilst the second is a powerful Malbec, also rated Fair Value by our team.
