Wotwine best value wines of the week – w/c 19th August 2019
w/c 19th August 2019
With the Bank Holiday weekend approaching and the prospect of a return to summer weather, our Tasting Panel have picked out four tempting and excellent value picnic and barbeque wines. Interestingly, three are from Spain, which continue to perform strongly as a source of great value and quality.

The Wotwine panel of independent experts tastes a wide range of supermarket wines every week to pick out the top buys for you. We won’t recommend a wine unless it is at least “Fair Value”, so worth within 10% either way of the retail price, but we try to find those that give you a bit of a bargain. Happy and great-value drinking… in moderation of course!
£5.00 & Under
Wines at under £5.00 per bottle are likely to be simple but we look for something solidly-made, free of any obvious faults with some characteristics of the grape variety.
The first is an attractive, fruity rosé from Carinena in north-east Spain that has enough weight to pair with food but, well chilled, is delicious as an aperitif. It is no longer showing online but look out for it in store.
Agoston Rosé 2017
From: Lidl
NOT AVAILABLE ONLINE Price: £4.99 Wotwine thinks this is worth: £6.00
Tasting note:Off-dry, tasty wine with rose petals, sweet berries and good palate weight.
£5.01 – £7.49
This is the core of the supermarket range and should be providing well-made wines with characteristics of the grape variety and a sense of place.
The second rosé, also available at Lidl, is from Tuscany in Italy and has a more savoury character than the Carinena. It is perfect with food, with a fresh palate.
From: Lidl Price: £5.99 Wotwine thinks this is worth: £6.50
Tasting note:Savoury, dry rose with morello cherries and lemon character.
The first white is a Rueda from north-west Spain, made with the Verdejo grape. It is perfect with seafood and perfectly balances ripe fruit with fresh acidity. It is currently on special offer at Morrisons, until 3 September, and is definitely worth seeking out.
From: Morrisons Price: £6.00 Wotwine thinks this is worth: £7.00
Tasting note:Bright, slightly tropical wine with pineapple and peach character and zingy acidity.
£7.50 – £9.99
Wines in this price rage should be clearly characteristic of variety and origin, with the best examples exhibiting skilled wine-making such as appropriate and deft use of oak. Albarino has become rather fashionable in recent years. As a result, prices from its heartland of Rias Baixas in Galicia, the cool north-west coastal region of Spain, have risen steadily so it is great to find an attractively-priced example. We have therefore nominated it as our well-deserved Wine of the Week.
