 31st May 2019

The Wotwine panel of independent experts tastes 40 – 60 supermarket wines a week to pick out the top buys for you.

With what has been a rather chilly May almost behind us and the prospect of some warmer weather, Just in time for the weekend we have taken a look at some lower-priced rosé wines for an impromptu picnic, barbecue or simply a pre-prandial on the balcony or in the garden.
We’ve struggled to find good value rosés recently so it was all the more exciting to find some last week that are not only cheap but also genuinely Good Value. It’s notable that they are all from Spain and Italy so don’t attract the “Provencal Premium”! So here’s to some summer sun: cheers!

The Wotwine panel of independent experts tastes a wide range of supermarket wines every week to pick out the top buys for you. We won’t recommend a wine unless it is at least “Fair Value”, so worth within 10% either way of the retail price, but we try to find those that give you a bit of a bargain.  Happy and great-value drinking… in moderation of course!

£5.00 & Under

Wines at £5.00 or less per bottle are likely to be simple but we look for something solidly-made, free of any obvious faults with some characteristics of the grape variety.
First up is a very well-priced, easy-drinking wine from Spain. The residual sugar gives it some extra weight on the palate so it works well either as an aperitif or with food.

Also available for below £5.00 is this attractive, fruity and off-dry wine from Italy. It’s a little lower in alcohol than usual, at 11.5%, so is a good bet for a hot afternoon.

£5.00 – £7.49

This is the core of supermarket ranges and should be providing well-made wines with characteristics of the grape variety and a sense of place.
We’re back to Spain for the two remaining wines. The first is a dry but fruity option and again offers genuinely Good Value, whilst the second is fairly priced and also lighter at 11.5% abv.
